Learn to Sail Days

Congratulations to all our Years 7 to 10 students who had a fantastic time learning to sail the school's 420 dinghies last week.  Members of the Wentworth Sailing Academy skippered the boats, directing the willing learners what to pull and where to sit etc.  Many of the teachers also took part and thoroughly enjoyed learning to sailing with the students, sharing the laughs as well as the spills.  Well done to all involved.

Sailing at Algies Bay

Well done to Oliver Reeves who represented Wentworth at a school fleet regatta at Algies Bay on Monday. Oliver wasn't placed in the 4 races but it was a great learning experience. Big thank you to Cameron Hughes who came along as support.

First Win for Junior Girl Rowers

Our junior girls' rowing squad (made up of Rebecca Faletanoai, Mia Cunningham-South, Alicia McColl, Shena Donald and cox Alana Pribicevich) had their first win at the recent WTMC-TAKA Regatta at Lake Pupuke in the Girls' U15 Coxed Quad Sculls.  The girls had a brilliant start and led the race the entire way. It was an amazing race to watch as the distance between them and the second boat just got bigger and bigger, with Wentworth rowers winning by at least 6 boat lengths!  The best part of the race was listening to the commentator who said, "This Wentworth crew look very polished for this stage in the season. A big compliment must go to whomever is coaching them."  We look forward to more of this from this crew.

Sailing Regatta at Algies Bay

In the last week of Term 3 the Wentworth Sailing squad attended a regatta in Algies Bay in the 420 racing dinghies. The captain of the team, Cameron Hughes, was ill so new combinations had to be sorted. The 3 skippers were Liam Herbert, Sean Herbert and Oliver Reeves, and the 3 crew were Mel Hopkins, Sam Haggerty and Kip Simpson. This was the first time that Oliver had skippered at a regatta and the first regatta for both Sam and Kip, so it was all very exciting!
Strong winds on the first day meant that racing was cancelled and our students returned to school and their classes. The next two days the sailors sailed race after race, even taking lunch on the water. They worked very hard and the experienced skippers of Liam and Sean directed their teams to many wins.  Everybody learnt more sailing rules and can be proud of their efforts of second place overall.  This was an excellent regatta and well done to all.  Wentworth sailors are now looking forward to the next regatta at Keri Keri in December.

Nth Island Secondary School Ski Champs

Last week Wentworth competed in the NISSSC competition at Turoa ski field.  This was a milestone for Wentworth as we had 2 teams this year, comprising of Jack and Ambrose Ledbrook, Alexander Gregory, Michael Coutts, Max Romminger, Kelly Main, Alexis Eccles and Louise Fonclara.  All skiers skied really well and made it down the courses with fabulous control and speed.  We placed about mid-range in the field, and considering our skiers are not part of race squads, our results are fantastic.  They were:
Wentworth A - 56th out of 117 teams
Wentworth B - 68th out of 117 teams
Despite some challenging weather we had a wonderful time away.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and there was lots of laughter, jokes and fun both on skis and off.  A huge thank you to my 3 star helpers - Wayne Romminger, Greg Main and Christian Fonclara - who helped as course assistants, braving the cold conditions to be marshals, gate-keepers and helping at the top of the girls' course.  And to top it all off, Wentworth B team won a spot prize!!!  Well done everyone.

Years 7/8 Netball Team win their Division.

The girls played a fast paced game, with a special effort in the last quarter to get the result they had worked for so hard. Each player was able to contribute their best netball skills in helping the team drive forward to win first place for their grade, with a 24 -12 win against Kingsway.
This was a reward for the dedication of each of those players who made it to two practices a week for a few weeks during the season to ensure their skill levels continued to improve.  Thank you so much to senior students Maddie Woodd and Stephanie Watts for their coaching, leadership and encouragement throughout this season; the team hopes you are proud of your achievement.  A big thank you also to Linda Hopper (Year 9 coach) for her kindness and expertise with additional coaching sessions.
As a reward for the Years 7/8 and Year 9 netball teams they will be having a special meet/greet and coaching session with Anna Harrison (nee Scarlett) this month! Thank you so much to Mia Boot's father for organizing such an awesome experience for our girls.

Wentworth Netballers Win their Division at UNISS!

The Wentworth Senior 1 Netball team spent last week at Waitakere competing with 112 other schools and 1600 Netball players in the Upper North Island Secondary School Tournament.  Each day they played 2 games. The first 5 games were in a 'round robin' and they played Opotiki, Glendowie, Avondale Invitational, Pio Pio and Pompellier. The next 3 games were the top 8 competition, against Reporoa, Tauhara and Kaipara. The final day consisted of the semi-final against Te Kuiti and final against Glendowie. Our team remained undefeated throughout the entire tournament, with some points differences of up to 35. The girls came out with no injuries but were very sore, with tired bodies. As winners of D Grade, Wentworth will be one of only 3 teams promoted into C Grade for 2015. The team had lots of fun at our accommodation at Bethells Beach, spending each evening in a unique way with our dance competition pizza night as the highlight. Thank you very much to coach Tania Cargo, whose invaluable advice and encouragement enabled this achievement, and to team manager Kim Reeves, for her wonderful organisation (and milk and bananas!). Thank you to the parents for their support and meals. Congratulations to the girls who worked hard in every game and maintained an incredibly positive team spirit throughout the week, resulting in bringing home the silverware to Wentworth.

Netball - week ending 22 June

Wentworth 1:  Wentworth 33 : Whangaparaoa 18
The score reflects how well the girls played on Saturday.  The team had to play smarter netball to make the game challenging for them and to continue their development, and hopefully this will see them continue on to  finish well in the second half of the season.  The girls also played a fantastic game on Monday night in the Rodney Schools’ challenge against Rodney College, winning by 20 goals.  The Rodney Challenge is a 5 week round-robin tournament with schools' top netball teams from as far away as Dargaville taking part.
Wentworth 2:  Wentworth 38 : Whangaparaoa 14
Wentworth senior netball 2 had a great game on Saturday against Whangaparaoa College with another convincing win. The girls played very well with no reserves and a joint player of the day went to Sasha and Brooke for their great effort in the mid court.
Year 9 team:
Our Year 9 Netball team unfortunately had to default this week with 4 members away at camp and injuries within the rest of team.   Hopefully this game can be played at another time and the team is especially looking forward to their next game on Tuesday as they get to play on the prime inside courts at NNH!
Intermediate team:  Wentworth 37 : Orewa 10
A very tough game against Orewa 2 on Saturday, with the whole team tired from camp.  The team will make up for it next time they play them!

Wentworth Host Inter-School Years 5/6 Hockey competition

12 school's took part in last week's competition held on Wentworth's astro-turf sports field in warm, sunny weather, with Wentworth College students providing their expertise as umpires.  The Wentworth team made us all very proud, playing with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship and making it through to the finals.  However, it was Warkworth Primary who triumphed on the day.  Well done to all competitors and umpires!
